Kia unveils EV9 electric SUV and PV5 van concepts

At the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, Kia presented two SUV concepts designed for active off-road driving. The new concepts, dubbed EV9 “Advntr” and PV5 “Wkndr”, are redesigned versions of popular models and have been designed for leisure and “unforgettable adventures” in the great outdoors.

Both concepts were created by designers from the Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in Irvine, California, USA. The press release, published on October 30, contained a mysterious blurry image of the SUV with Kia’s signature front end and the phrase “All roads lead to SEMA.” At the time, Kia was expected to unveil one of its promised electric pickup trucks. However, it turned out that it was the EV9 and PV5 off-road concepts that were presented at SEMA, an indoor exhibition that traditionally showcases concepts, equipment and parts designed for heavy-duty use. Casual visitors are not allowed to the exhibition, and to get there, you must register on the official website.

Both models, according to the company, “seamlessly combine form and function for safe interaction with nature.” The first EV9 Advntr concept received new front and rear bumpers, reinforced side sills and off-road tires for improved off-road performance. The vehicle’s ground clearance is increased by 3 inches (7.6 cm) compared to the standard version, and a roof rack is installed for transporting things or a tent.

The PV5 Wkndr is an off-road interpretation of the electric van first unveiled at CES 2024. The standard PV5 is designed for commercial transport, but Kia’s designers decided to make it more versatile by adding increased ground clearance, off-road tires and a modular interior that can be adapted to suit any need. In addition, the concept was equipped with solar panels and wheels with built-in hydraulic turbines to recharge the batteries and power the on-board compressor. One of the interesting features of the Wkndr is also the “Gear Head” storage system with a pull-out compartment that provides additional space for things.

While the models remain concepts, Kia has been able to demonstrate its ambitions to develop new electric vehicles that can compete with the likes of Ford and Rivian, experts say. Whether these models will appear in mass production is still unknown.
