The obvious goal for e-book makers is to convey the sensations of reading paper books as accurately as possible. In the future, some of these devices will even be able to be opened like a regular book: the trend for foldable displays is just beginning to take hold. The first e-book of this kind was the Readmoo MooInk V.

Readmoo MooInk V was presented at the Touch Taiwan exhibition — the e-book can boast an 8-inch display with a density of 300 pixels per inch, that is, its resolution is higher than that of the standard for today’s devices — 1440 × 1872 pixels. The panel is made by the world’s leading specialist in electronic ink technology — E Ink. This is a Gallery 3 display, displaying 50 thousand colors. The device’s body is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy, thanks to which the weight was reduced to 225 grams.

The flexible screen is designed for 200,000 folding cycles. With an average frequency of use — five reading sessions per day, which gives ten folding and unfolding actions — the estimated service life of the screen reaches 55 years. The e-book can be used by unfolding it at 180° or 90°. The basis of the E Ink flexible panel technology, as the developer explained, was laid 19 years ago — the first implementations were demonstrated by the Dutch company Polymer Vision, but it did not achieve success in the market and was liquidated. The creation of the panel presented at the exhibition took nine years.

Readmoo did not specify the price, the start date of sales, or the geography of distribution of MooInk V. However, the appearance of the device indicates that similar models will follow, including from other manufacturers.
