Tecno is no longer new to the foldable smartphone space and has been showcasing experimental projects from its R&D arm from time to time. If last year it was the Phantom Ultimate device with a rollable screen, now the concept of a three-fold smartphone has been shown, the display of which folds out to 10 inches.
Existing devices with foldable screens have greatly blurred the line between smartphones and tablets, and the Phantom Ultimate 2 offers an even larger display that rivals larger tablets. When folded, the device screen has a diagonal of 6.48 inches, and when unfolded it is a 10-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 2880 × 1620 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3.
Another distinctive feature of the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 is TDDI technology, which includes both the display driver and the touch sensor on a single chip. The presence of a double hinge mechanism does not prevent the design from having a thickness of only 11 mm when folded; the developer tested it for 300 thousand folding cycles. The battery cover has a record thinness of only 0.25 mm. A pair of hinges help reduce creases in the middle of the display to a minimum.
Tecno offers several practical uses for the three-leaf design, such as in a mini-laptop format where the bottom flap turns into an on-screen keyboard. You can also fold the device into a “tent” format, and the two doors will help in dialogue in different languages or in collaboration. Finally, there is a multi-window mode that allows you to run multiple applications at the same time. Tecno has not yet announced plans to release such a device on the market.
