Earlier this year, Apple released an updated version of the AirPods Max headphones with a USB Type-C interface. However, you shouldn’t expect a model with a new chip or improved noise reduction, at least in the foreseeable future. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple has no plans to significantly update AirPods Max in the near future.
Apple introduced the $549 AirPods Max headphones in December 2020 and hasn’t updated them in nearly four years. In September of this year, a version of the headphones with a USB Type-C interface was released, to which several new color options for the device body were added. However, the developers have not implemented any major improvements in the new model, such as the Apple H2 chip or support for adaptive sound.
According to Gurman, at $549, AirPods Max headphones are not among the company’s priority products. They’re not popular enough to justify the significant investment required to develop new AirPods Max 2 with significant hardware and software improvements. At the same time, the headphones cannot be called a failure, so the company is not ready to completely abandon them.
Gurman believes Apple will keep AirPods Max in their current form for the “foreseeable future.” This means it could be several years before a truly updated version of the AirPods Max hits the market. Obviously, to increase sales, Apple should reduce the price of AirPods Max, but the company has no incentive to do this.
