OpenAI poached Microsoft’s vice president for generative AI research

Microsoft has announced that its vice president of artificial intelligence research, Sebastien Bubeck, will leave the company to join OpenAI. His position at the new place of work is still unknown, Reuters reports.

«Sebastien has decided to leave Microsoft to continue his work on creating AGI (artificial intelligence),” a Microsoft spokesperson said, adding that the company expects to continue its relationship with OpenAI through Bubeck’s work. The specialist himself did not provide any comments about the change of job.

Most of Bubek’s co-authors on the Phi large language model research project, which is smaller than its peers, continue to work at Microsoft and intend to further develop these AI systems. In recent months, OpenAI has faced a mass exodus of specialists – in September the company lost its chief technical officer, Mira Murati. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said there is no connection between the mass exodus of employees from the company and its upcoming restructuring.
