OpenAI launches long-awaited feature – ChatGPT voice assistant

OpenAI has begun rolling out the Enhanced Voice feature to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and ChatGPT Team for Business users. Enterprise and Edu plan users will start getting access to this feature as early as next week, Bloomberg reports.

The feature, which can respond to users’ written and visual cues using voice, was first unveiled in May. However, the company decided to delay its launch by several months as some potential safety issues were identified. However, in July the feature became available to a limited number of ChatGPT Plus clients.

OpenAI said it will add five more different voices as part of the expanded rollout of the new feature, bringing the total to nine. At the same time, the voice assistant will not be able to imitate the speech of other people and, accordingly, create fakes. Also for security purposes, filters have been added to ensure that the algorithm can identify and reject some requests to create music or other forms of copyrighted audio.

Bloomberg notes that the ChatGPT voice assistant, unfortunately, will not receive a number of features that OpenAI initially announced. In particular, at the moment there is no previously announced computer vision function, which allows using the user’s smartphone camera to interact with a chatbot.
