Less expensive AM5 boards based on AMD B850 and B840 chipsets will have to wait until early next year

Unlike board models based on older X870 and X870E chipsets, which are expected this fall, more affordable board models based on AMD B850 and B840 chipsets will go on sale only at the beginning of 2025. This is stated by the ComputerBase portal.

The good news is that existing AMD 600 series motherboards fully support the new Ryzen 9000 processors. The only requirement for installing a new processor in this case is to first update the motherboard BIOS.

The AMD 800 series chipset line represents the first time that the manufacturer has expanded the range of B-series chipsets and introduced a non-x50 class system logic set in its composition. The B840 is an entry-level chipset. Most likely, it will be popular among system integrators and office PC manufacturers. The chipset does not support CPU overclocking and is equipped only with support for PCIe 3.0 lines. Given the absence of A-series chipsets in the new AMD chipset family, it becomes obvious that the B840 is the successor to the previous generation A620 chipset.

In turn, the B850 is a direct successor to the B650 logic set. The new chipset supports CPU overclocking and also offers support for PCIe 5.0 lanes for SSDs and PCIe 4.0 lanes for the main PCIe expansion slots, including the graphics card slot.

The news about the postponement of the release of the B850 and B840 chipsets is also confirmed by the fact that at the Gamescom gaming exhibition, currently taking place in Cologne, Germany, none of the manufacturers presented new models of motherboards based on them. It is very likely that such boards will be presented in early January next year, at the CES 2025 electronics exhibition.
