As part of the annual Made by Google event, the search giant presented hardware and software innovations, such as the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphones and the Pixel Watch 3 smart watch. At the same time, the announcement of the folding smartphone Pixel 9 Pro Fold took place, which received a larger screen size compared to last year’s model, as well as other improvements.
Visually, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold isn’t much different from the original Pixel Fold. The most noticeable change in hardware is the increase in the size of the main display when unfolded. While last year’s Pixel Fold featured a 7.6-inch panel, the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold features an 8-inch panel. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 6 has a main screen size of 7.6 inches when unfolded. This change allows Google’s new device to claim the title of device with the largest display among foldable smartphones.
The main OLED display of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold with a resolution of 2152 × 2076 pixels, a pixel density of 373 PPI and a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz provides a maximum brightness of 2700 cd/m². The external display has also become larger: its diagonal has increased from 5.8 inches to 6.3 inches. It supports a resolution of 2424 × 1080 pixels, has a pixel density of 422 PPI, and is protected from mechanical damage by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. In addition to this, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is slightly thinner than its predecessor.
The main camera of the device is located in a massive block that protrudes above the surface of the body. It combines a 48-megapixel wide-angle sensor with a 10.5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and 20x zoom via Super Res Zoom. Supports shooting 4K video at speeds up to 60 frames per second. There is also a pair of front cameras of 10 megapixels each.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by a new eight-core Google Tensor G4 microprocessor paired with 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB storage. Autonomous operation is provided by a 4650 mAh battery.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold supports Google’s signature AI features, and the Gemini algorithm now powers the voice assistant. The smartphone comes with an annual Google One AI Premium subscription, which provides access to the advanced capabilities of the Gemini neural network, adds an AI assistant to Gmail and Docs, and also allows you to use 2 TB of Google cloud storage. The company promises to release updates for the operating system and features for seven years.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold runs Android 14 and retails for $1,799 for the 256GB RAM version and $1,919 for the 512GB RAM variant.
