Canon today announced its flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R1, for professionals. At the same time, the manufacturer introduced the EOS R5 Mark II, the long-awaited high-resolution successor to the popular Canon EOS R5. This new product is also aimed at professional use.
In the EOS R5 Mark II, the manufacturer used a proprietary 45-megapixel multilayer back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Thanks to the new matrix, the camera has a wide dynamic range of 16 stops. Like the EOS R1, the EOS R5 Mark II uses AI-based algorithms to zoom shots and improve autofocus speed and quality. The scaling function allows you to enlarge 45-megapixel images to 179 megapixels, and we are not talking about pixel shift, but about AI upscaling. Note that scaling can only be applied to JPEG files.
The new camera is equipped with Canon’s proprietary Digic X processor with a Digic Accelerator coprocessor, which, combined with a fast sensor, allows the device to read and analyze large amounts of information, which is the basis of the autofocus system. High speed is one of the features of the EOS R5 Mark II. The autofocus system is faster and more accurate, allowing the camera to shoot up to 30 frames per second, producing full-resolution RAW images with autofocus when using the electronic shutter.
The EOS R5 Mark II features a CFexpress Type B slot (supports CFexpress 2.0 technology) as well as a UHS-II SD memory card slot. The camera features a 5.76 million pixel electronic viewfinder with 0.76x magnification, which supports Canon’s Eye Control AF mode (allowing the user to move the AF area through the viewfinder). There is also a 3.2-inch rotating touchscreen with 2.1 million pixels. The screen can be turned to the side and used as a stand-alone display during video shooting.
The EOS R5 Mark II supports 8K DCI video recording at up to 30 fps, 8K RAW at up to 60 fps, 4K HDR at up to 60 fps, and more. The design includes a full-size HDMI interface, as well as independent connectors for microphone and headphones. The power source is a Canon LP-E6P battery, which promises longer battery life than the original EOS R5.
Overall, the EOS R5 Mark II looks like Canon’s most powerful and fully featured hybrid mirrorless camera yet. The new product will go on sale in August this year. The EOS R5 Mark II itself will cost $4,299, and for a kit with a Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens you will have to pay $5,399. Along with this, Canon will release battery packs for the EOS R5 Mark II. The $349 BG-R20 is the basic option, the $499 BG-R20EP has an Ethernet port for wired connectivity, and the CF-R20EP has a cooling fan and an Ethernet port but doesn’t provide additional power like the first two.
