No Way Out: Atomic Releases ‘Split’-Style Keyboard — No Escape Key

Atomic Keyboards has unveiled a limited edition MDR Dasher keyboard inspired by the cult TV series Severance. The new product recreates the unique design of a working device from the macrodata department of the fictional Lumon Industries and, like in the thriller, is devoid of the Escape, Control and Option keys.

The prototype that became the basis for the MDR Dasher design goes back to 1977 — to the Data General 6053 Dasher terminal. In the series, it was stylized as retro technology, reflecting the strictness and monolithic nature of the corporate culture. Now this image is embodied in a real working device. The keyboard received 73 keys in a compact 70-percent layout and is equipped with a built-in trackball and a block of navigation buttons. “This is really a tribute to the atmosphere of the series and the philosophy of Lumon founder Kier Eagan,” Atomic Keyboards described their design.

The device has already attracted interest from both fans of the series and collectors of retro gadgets. There is no exact information about the price and quantity of copies yet. However, the manufacturer’s website indicates a crossed-out price of $399, which may hint at the expected cost of the device.
