At Google I/O, the company announced a new feature in Chrome that will automatically update weak or compromised passwords in the browser. Now, if the system detects a weak password, Google’s Password Manager will prompt the user to automatically change it to a stronger one.

The Verge reports that the new feature was announced in advance so that developers could adapt their sites and apps before the release, which is scheduled for later this year. Currently, the Chrome browser only warns about unsafe passwords, but does not change them automatically.

«”If we just tell people their password is weak, having to change it manually is annoying,” said Parisa Tabriz, vice president and general manager of Chrome. “And if something is annoying, people ignore it. Automatic password changes are a step toward security and are convenient.”

When asked whether Chrome would regularly update old passwords, Tabriz said the browser would not do so without the user’s consent. She stressed that the company wants people to be in control of changing their data.
