Riding the wave of AI hype, Meta has unveiled a host of features and capabilities, including AI-generated characters with unique profiles that users have found “creepy and unnecessary.” Now, reports have emerged that Instagram
is testing a “Write with Meta
AI” feature that generates comment suggestions for users’ posts.

The new function is called via the pencil icon next to the text line under the publication. After calling the Meta function, AI will analyze the image and generate three comment options to choose from. To get more comment options, the user just needs to refresh the page.
In the example below, the AI suggested the following comments for a photo of a smiling man giving a thumbs up in his living room:

«“We’re regularly testing more features so you can use Meta AI in our apps,” a Meta
spokesperson said. “In addition to private messages, you’ll find Meta
AI in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to make your experience more engaging and useful.”
The new feature won’t appeal to users who believe that their friends deserve real, “live” comments, not AI-generated nonsense. On the other hand, people who leave hundreds of meaningless likes and comments in exchange for equally meaningless comments on their page will appreciate the new feature.
Meta already tested AI-generated comments on Facebook
last year. As with any test feature, it’s unknown when or if Meta
plans to roll out the feature more widely.
