Xiaomi is going to release its own processor for smartphones, Taiwanese media have found out

Xiaomi plans to release a single-chip platform (SoC) for smartphones of its own design, Taiwanese news publications UDN and DigiTimes write. Network sources attribute a similar intention to AMD.

It is reported that competition in the mobile processor manufacturer market will become more intense in 2025-2026, as the largest mobile SoC suppliers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple and Samsung will have to compete with new players.

According to rumors, Xiaomi will produce chips for its own smartphones, and possibly for some models of its Redmi and Poco brands. Chinese media claimed in October that the company had completed the digital design of its first processor based on the 3nm process technology. The chip should be ready for mass production at the beginning of 2025. Whether Xiaomi is going to use it for its future series of flagship smartphones is unknown.

Xiaomi is not new to developing SoCs for smartphones. According to The Wall Street Journal, Xiaomi several years ago was developing a mobile SoC codenamed Pinecone. The chip was based on the Arm architecture and consisted of four Cortex-A73 and four Cortex-A53 cores. Moreover, Xiaomi has repeatedly used subprocessors of its own design in its smartphones, which acted as a complement to Qualcomm chips. Perhaps this time we will again see only an auxiliary chip, and not the main one.

As for AMD, according to rumors its strategy in the mobile SoC market will to some extent repeat the strategy in the PC segment, the source writes. Here, too, the company will try to offer solutions that are similar in performance to solutions from competitors (MediaTek and Qualcomm), but more attractive in cost. At the moment, the only evidence pointing to AMD’s desire to enter the smartphone processor market are rumors that the company is allegedly developing a new Arm-based platform, codenamed Sound Wave. However, it is possible that we are talking about an Arm processor for Windows, and not for Android.
