LG Display introduced the world’s first stretchable display – it can increase by 50%

South Korean company LG Display has announced the world’s first truly stretchable flexible display – it can expand by 50%, which is the highest in the industry. The manufacturer demonstrated the new panel at a meeting with industry representatives, scientists and researchers who are involved in a project to create stretchable displays.

The technology for creating stretchable displays is considered breakthrough because such panels can be freely transformed into different shapes, including by stretching, folding and twisting. The 12-inch panel presented by LG can be increased to 18 inches by stretching without compromising the quality of the transmitted image. At the same time, the pixel density of 100 ppi and the full range of RGB colors are maintained.

Compared to the first prototype of the stretchable display, which was unveiled in 2022, the maximum stretch ratio of the new panel has more than doubled, from 20% to 50%. Increasing the stretch ratio will allow for a variety of display designs, potentially increasing the competitiveness of new panels during commercialization.

To create the stretchable display, a special silicon substrate was used, as well as a new wiring structure and a light source based on 40 micrometer micro-LEDs. This approach made it possible to create a panel capable of demonstrating high-quality images even in adverse conditions, as well as being resistant to external influences, including low and high temperatures. Stretchable displays are not only thin and lightweight, they can also attach to curved surfaces. It is expected that such panels will be widely used in various fields of human activity.
