Blogger Proxy Gate Tactician decided to check out what it’s like to play through the fantasy role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 from a first-person perspective. The initiative even attracted the attention of Larian Studios head Swen Vincke. Possible spoilers.
Of course, the camera in Baldur’s Gate 3 is isometric and does not support first-person mode. To achieve the desired effect, a combination of mods was used (instructions for their use can be found in the video description).
The change in perspective radically transformed Baldur’s Gate 3. Proxy Gate Tactician, who had played the RPG for more than 1,600 hours, regularly stopped to admire the locations and small details that had already been explored dozens of times.
Proxy Gate Tactician was also impressed that in many cases Larian Studios worked on how the environment looks when viewed from the bottom up, something the original camera wouldn’t allow for.
However, in some places Larian still limited itself to working on an isometric perspective: for example, in the Lunar Towers it is better not to look up, and the Elder Brain above the fortress in the Upper City is not displayed, although that is where it hovered.
Despite its shortcomings, the first-person perspective of Baldur’s Gate 3 intrigued Vincke. “Now I also want to play like this – just look at this,” the developer urged, leaving a link to a 20-minute video of Proxy Gate Tactician.
Baldur’s Gate 3 left early access on August 3, 2023 on PC (Steam, GOG), and subsequently reached Mac, PS5, Xbox Series X and S. In the future, the game will still have cross-play and a photo mode, and now, maybe, a camera from first person?
