To unblock social network X in Brazil, Musk paid a fine of $5 million, but in the wrong place

Brazil’s Supreme Court has said that social network X transferred money from fines to the wrong bank account, delaying the decision to reopen the platform in the country. According to Reuters, paying a fine is the last step necessary to lift the block after a prosecutor decides that X violated local laws. The company’s lawyers say all invoices were paid correctly.

Recall that social network X was blocked in Brazil at the end of August after it failed to comply with court orders to combat “hate speech” and did not appoint a legal representative in the country. Despite filing for reinstatement, Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes demanded that the money be transferred to the correct account before he could consider further steps to reopen the company.

Once the amount is transferred to the required account, the Brazilian Attorney General will have to provide his opinion on the case before the court makes a final decision. X’s lawyers again asked the courts to reopen the platform, insisting that the payment was made correctly.

Previously, on September 26, the company had already filed a request to lift the block after complying with a number of court requirements, including banning some accounts under investigation. However, Judge de Moraes then ruled that more than $5 million in fines must be paid before a final decision. On Friday, the company’s lawyers told the court that X had already transferred 28.6 million reais ($5.24 million) to pay off the fines, which is confirmed by documents .
