Google has introduced an updated version of its AI note-taking app NotebookLM, which can now analyze YouTube videos and quickly extract key points from long videos, converting them into text and topical links. Previously, the application could only handle text formats.
The new feature is based on transcription technology – converting audio into text. After the user inserts a link into NotebookLM to a video that cannot be watched in full, artificial intelligence will independently create a short overview of the main topics discussed in the video, explains The Verge. Users will also be able to get more detailed information by clicking on a link with a specific topic.
When testing the new feature in The Verge’s iPhone 16 Pro review video, NotebookLM generated topics such as “Apple AI,” “iPhone 16 Pro Camera,” and “Photo Processing.” When choosing one of the topics, the application not only provided information, but also linked to specific points in the video where this information was mentioned, which made it possible to quickly find the necessary fragments. Notably, users can also create an audio summary based on the video content to listen to in podcast format.
It’s worth noting that the new feature may not work with recently added videos, particularly those published less than two days before the request. However, in most cases, NotebookLM demonstrated a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
While Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot can transcribe and summarize video, the new version of NotebookLM can also handle audio recordings, making the app a versatile tool for use in a variety of fields.
