Google Meet launches AI function for automatic note-taking of meetings and online meetings

The Google Meet app has a new AI-powered feature that automates the note-taking process during online meetings. The Take Notes for Me feature is now available to Google Workspace users.

First announced in 2023, Take Notes for Me is not just a speech transcription tool like Google Meet’s tool, but an AI-powered feature that analyzes the conversation, highlights key points, and creates a summary of everything that was said in the meeting. As The Verge notes, this promises to make life much easier for those who missed an important meeting or have difficulty absorbing information and taking notes at the same time.

Take Notes for Me automatically creates notes in Google Docs and attaches them to a calendar event after the meeting ends, making it easy to review key points. Additionally, a Google Docs file is sent to the meeting organizer and all participants who have enabled this feature. “Even if you’re late to a meeting, Take Notes for Me will provide a quick summary of what you missed so you can quickly get up to speed,” Google said. The feature will also include links to recordings and transcripts of the meeting if the option has been enabled.

For people who have difficulty understanding spoken language and taking notes at the same time, this new feature can be a real lifesaver. It will allow you to concentrate on the discussion and be more involved in the process, without being distracted by note-taking. For example, for people with hearing loss or processing difficulties, Take Notes for Me can significantly improve the accessibility and effectiveness of participation in video conferences, since instead of constantly stressing and trying to catch details, people can focus on the content of the discussion by relying on automatically generated notes.

The feature is already available to Google Workspace users with a Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium or AI Meetings & Messaging subscription, but by September 10, 2024, Take Notes for Me will be available to all Google Workspace users, although for now only in English.
