Rumors: MacBook with foldable display will be smaller and arrive later than expected

Apple has abandoned development of a MacBook with a 20.25-inch foldable screen in favor of a more compact 18.8-inch version. Due to complications with the project, the company had to postpone mass production of the computer – now it will start at the end of 2027 or even in 2028. All this was reported by authoritative analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Many large electronics manufacturers have already launched the production of smartphones with folding displays, and Apple decided to rely on a larger format – the task turned out to be difficult, and the company had to reconsider its plans. The analyst did not specify why the company abandoned the 20.25-inch option, but it is likely due to some technical difficulties.

Due to mechanical and display problems, Apple also had to postpone the mass production launch of the 18.8-inch foldable MacBook. It was originally supposed to launch in the first half of 2026, but the company now expects to do so in late 2027 or 2028 if no new development obstacles arise. Given Apple’s commitment to delivering products with near-flawless designs, the biggest hurdle it may not be able to overcome will be the visible crease when the computer is unfolded.

Due to the large number of parts in the hinge mechanism, the number of potential points of failure also turned out to be large – because of this, Apple engineers will have to rework the design many times. In addition, her company is planning to release a foldable iPad: the current supply chain indicates that such a product does not exist. There’s no word on a foldable iPhone either, suggesting that the project may be in limbo. Apparently, the folding MacBook will be the first device of this kind in Apple’s product range.
