Japan has begun installing 5G base stations with antennas built into window glass

Increasing the operating frequencies of cellular communications leads to an expansion of the data transmission channel, but also reduces the distance of reliable communication. This occurs due to stronger attenuation of the high-frequency signal in obstacles. The issue is resolved by increasing the number of base stations and their denser placement. In Japan, they came up with a placement method that couldn’t be denser – they installed a station on a window glass, covering the room and the neighboring street with a signal.

The decision to install base stations (antennas) on window glass was made by JTower, a company that creates and leases telecommunications infrastructure, including cell towers, to cellular operators. Together with glass manufacturer AGC Inc, JTower has developed a 5G antenna for placement on window glass. The operator NTT Docomo took advantage of the first experience.

According to JTower, installing 5G antennas on glass will provide the best communication indoors and at the same time outdoors outside the window. This may not be necessary everywhere, but where the landscape makes it difficult to create normal coverage or the space outside the window is often used for public events. The presented antenna and equipment covers the 5G Sub6 band (up to 6 GHz). The first installation was made on the windows of the Shinjuku 3-chome East Building.

According to the developer, it will look aesthetically pleasing and natural, plus it will not be conspicuous, especially in light of the fact that cellular base stations seriously irritate a certain proportion of citizens.
