What if: big-budget Fallout could have been released instead of Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian

«I felt like there was a glass ceiling hanging over us that couldn’t be broken without production costs, budget, marketing and other AAA-level things,” Vincke recalls.

A major franchise was supposed to help with Larian Studios’ transition to a new league, but the choice is not wide: “It could be Ultima, it could be Fallout, it could be Baldur’s Gate.”

The developers pursued Baldur’s Gate first, but almost stumbled out of the blue. The studio had to assemble the design document for the future game in the process of preparing Divinity: Original Sin 2 for the premiere, so it turned out to be “lousy.”

Everyone knows how the story ends: 11 months after its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to receive Game of the Year awards. The success of the project at numerous awards even turned into an unusual problem for Larian Studios.
