Huawei will introduce artificial intelligence into heavy engineering

US sanctions, under which Huawei Technologies has been operating since 2019, force it to actively seek new markets for its products and services. Perhaps it was precisely because of this unfortunate coincidence that she became interested in introducing artificial intelligence technologies in the field of heavy engineering, concluding a cooperation agreement with the Chinese equipment manufacturer ZGCMC.

Operating under the full name of Sichuan Zigong Conveying Machine Group Co, the Chinese company is one of the largest manufacturers of equipment and machinery for the mining and other raw materials industries of the PRC economy. Through cooperation with ZGCMC, Huawei hopes to introduce the use of large language models in the industry. The cooperation agreement will be valid for three years.

The Chinese industrial giant intends to prioritize the use of Huawei solutions and services in its operations. Huawei, among other things, undertakes the development of specialized software for the partner, as well as personnel training. The financial side of the transaction is not disclosed. The partners will also develop cooperation in the field of cloud computing, big data analysis, digitalization of core industries and the creation of “smart” factories.

Huawei already has experience in the mining industry. Through collaboration with Huawei, Shaanxi Coal Industry, for example, was able to halve the number of miners working 100 meters underground through the introduction of industrial 5G networks and artificial intelligence systems in production. The Chinese authorities are challenging the country’s coal industry to transfer the largest and most dangerous mines in terms of working conditions to a high level of automation and digitalization by 2025. In total, there are about 4,000 coal mines in China; the country is the largest supplier of this type of fuel in the world. By 2035, all mines in China are required to undergo comprehensive modernization.

Huawei is simultaneously developing its competencies in the field of automation of medical institutions and ports. Such solutions will contribute to the growth of labor productivity in relevant sectors of the Chinese economy, and in some cases will help solve the problem of shortage or aging of personnel.
