US authorities launch investigation into chip import chains, threatening new tariffs

The delay in introducing higher duties on semiconductor imports to the United States was, among other things, intended to allow for a more in-depth analysis of supply chains, and the country’s authorities have already initiated a corresponding investigation, according to data from the official journal of the US Federal Government, cited by CNBC.

In addition to the semiconductor components themselves, finished electronic devices based on them, as well as equipment for their production, will be analyzed. The very beginning of the investigation confirms recent statements by American officials that electronic devices and semiconductor components will be regulated under a separate customs regime, rather than exempted from import duties on an indefinite basis.

The U.S. Department of Commerce, which will oversee the investigation, will also look into the possibility of increasing domestic production of the goods in question to reduce reliance on imports. The initiators of the investigation will need to determine whether additional measures, such as higher tariffs, could help protect U.S. national security in international trade.

Wednesday marks the start of a 21-day period for public input on the investigation. The 1962 law allows the US president to impose restrictions on the import of certain goods if their entry poses a threat to national security. A similar investigation will be conducted into the pharmaceutical industry.
