Huawei Launches World’s First 10-Gigabit Internet – 8K Movie Downloads in a Minute

Chinese IT giant Huawei and one of the country’s largest telecommunications companies, China Unicom, have set up and tested the country’s first 10G broadband data network. It was deployed in the Xiong’an District of Baoding City in Hebei Province. During the testing, it was possible to not only achieve data transfer speeds above 9800 Mbps, but also stabilize the latency rate at 3 ms.

«This 10Gbps broadband channel is based on the world’s leading 50G PON solution. By upgrading the core architecture of the fiber optic network, the throughput per user will increase from the traditional gigabit to 10Gbps level, while at the same time compressing the network latency to the millisecond level,” the message on the MyDrivers portal says.

During testing, download speeds on the end user device reached 9,834 Mbps, while upload speeds were 1,008 Mbps. This speed would allow you to download a two-hour 8K movie in just 72 seconds. At the same time, network latency was consistently 3 ms. These figures significantly exceed the current broadband standard for the consumer market.

This achievement not only demonstrates the maturity of 50G PON technology, but also lays the foundation for future high-bandwidth applications, including 8K video streaming, cloud storage with 10Gbps download speeds, AR/VR, and more. Earlier this month, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice identifying 168 pilot projects for the deployment of 10Gbps data transmission networks.
