Windows 11 24H2 began to break games again – Microsoft suspended the release of the update

A bug has been identified in the Windows 11 24H2 update that may cause colors to appear incorrectly in games. According to some users, the problem affects not only games. Windows 11 may also display desktop colors incorrectly if the “Automatically manage app color” option is enabled in the operating system settings.

Microsoft has also acknowledged an issue with the Auto HDR feature. The latter is designed to improve the quality of color display in games by automatically converting SDR content, that is, with the standard dynamic range of brightness used by default, into HDR content with an extended dynamic range of brightness.

As noted, using Auto HDR not only leads to incorrect display of colors, but also causes some applications to crash. “After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, you may experience problems playing games if Auto HDR is enabled on your device. You may also notice that some games stop responding,” Microsoft points out.

The company has suspended the release of the Windows 11 24H2 update for systems that have Auto HDR enabled. For such systems, Windows Update will not offer to install Windows 11 24H2. If the Windows 11 24H2 update is already installed, you can disable the Auto HDR function by opening “Settings → System → Graphics → Auto HDR”. The function can be disabled for the entire system or for individual applications.

Microsoft told Windows Latest that it is already working on a fix that will be released in the near future.
