The new product is based on a proprietary Western Digital controller, as well as 112-layer BiCS5 TLC flash memory chips. For the 8 TB WD_Black SN850X drive, the manufacturer claims a sequential read speed of 7200 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 6600 MB/s. The performance in random read and write operations of the new product is 1.2 million IOPS. The SSD uses DRAM DDR4 cache memory, the volume of which the manufacturer does not specify.

For the WD_Black SN850X with a capacity of 8 TB, a resource of 4800 TBW (terabyte of overwritten information) is declared. The manufacturer provides a five-year warranty on the SSD, as does all drives of the specified series.

The WD_Black SN850X SSD will be available in two versions: without a radiator, which is priced at , and also with a radiator costing $899.99. For comparison, the competing model Nextorage NE1N8TB of the same volume and offering similar characteristics is priced at the same $849.99. The new product from WD is 100 MB/s slower than this SSD in terms of sequential reading, but 100 thousand IOPS more productive in random write operations. The less productive Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 8TB model with read and write speeds of 7000 and 6000 MB/s, respectively, is now offered for $1,199.99.
