Valve Celebrates Steam Deck and SteamOS Success, Hints at New Horizons in 2025

Valve has released a massive 2024 report summing up its performance. The document covers a lot of ground, but pays special attention to the portable gaming system Steam Deck. According to Valve, Steam Deck gamers spent 330 million hours playing games in 2024, which is 64% more than in 2023.

The report also mentions the upcoming release of SteamOS on the Lenovo Go S, with SteamOS potentially being available on other popular portable PCs like the ROG Ally X and MSI Claw, expanding the user experience. Valve is confident in what it’s doing, stating, “The future of hardware at Valve is bright. Steam Deck, SteamOS, and SteamVR bring tremendous value to gamers and developers, building on a decade of investment in UI, Linux compatibility, input support, custom chips, motion tracking, displays, power efficiency, and more.”

The company emphasizes that its investments in technology benefit the entire gaming industry – developers get new tools, and gamers even more opportunities. For example, Valve notes that Steam can now be found anywhere, even at the airport.

But despite the positive forecasts, there is no announcement of Steam Deck 2 yet. Valve is also not considering a return to the failed concept of PC Steam Machines, calling this project not a priority. However, the company makes it clear that users will be able to independently install SteamOS on more powerful devices and even assemble home PCs with this system, turning them into an analogue of consoles.

Whatever Valve’s future plans, analysts say its market position remains strong. The Steam store continues to dominate digital distribution, and the success of Steam Deck and the spread of the SteamOS operating system only strengthen the company’s influence in the industry.
