At the initial stage, when TSMC management negotiated with the US authorities to build three silicon wafer processing plants in Arizona, the talk was about investments in the amount of $65 billion. This week, the Taiwanese manufacturer confirmed that it is ready to spend $100 billion more in the US and build five plants for different purposes.

As can be understood from the official press release on the TSMC website, three more enterprises specializing in silicon wafer processing will be added to the three already planned enterprises in Arizona, and two other enterprises will master chip packaging using advanced methods. The latter initiative will allow the creation of a ready-made infrastructure for the production of the same chips for computing accelerators in the United States. Crystals manufactured in the United States will not need to be sent to Taiwan for testing and packaging, and then returned to the American continent.
Recall that the first TSMC enterprise specializing in contract production of 4-nm products has been operating in Arizona since the end of last year. Until now, it was believed that its client was only Apple, but this week, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced its intention to start receiving advanced solutions from TSMC for its own needs by the end of this year. Nvidia simply stated that it intends to rely on TSMC’s manufacturing infrastructure in the United States to form its supply chains. In a press release, TSMC listed interested clients as follows: Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Qualcomm.
By the way, TSMC will not limit itself to enterprises in the USA, it will also build a new research center. It already has similar divisions in Texas and California. The oldest TSMC enterprise for the production of chips in the USA is located in Washington State, it was founded in the mid-nineties of the last century, but now produces chips using outdated technologies.
The construction of new TSMC plants in the United States will create about 40,000 jobs in the next four years at the construction stage alone, with tens of thousands of new employees directly involved in the development and production of chips. Over the next ten years, TSMC expects this project to bring a total effect of $200 billion to the American economy. Currently, the first of TSMC’s new plants in Arizona provides jobs for more than 3,000 people and occupies an area of 445 hectares. TSMC will also locate two chip packaging plants in Arizona.
