TikTok is back, but changed: US users complain about censorship

US TikTok users reported signs of censorship and increased content moderation after the platform was restored in the US following an executive order suspending the ban signed by President Donald Trump. There are restrictions on live broadcasts, frequent warnings about misinformation and the removal of posts, Reuters reports.

TikTok was previously temporarily blocked as part of a new law introduced by the Joe Biden administration due to concerns about the threat to national security. Since the ban was lifted a week ago, users have noted that the number of live broadcasts has decreased, and posts are increasingly being removed or flagged as violating community rules, even if such behavior was previously considered acceptable. However, TikTok said that its algorithms and policies have not changed, and any failures are due to temporary instability in the process of restoring the service. “We are working to return the algorithm to normal, but this may temporarily impact the functionality of the application and user access to it,” the company said in a statement.

However, users are reporting new restrictions such as truncated search results, warnings about misinformation and calls to check sources of information. Some claim that TikTok is blocking comments with phrases like “Free Palestine” and “Free Luigi” (a reference to Luigi Magnone, the accused murderer of a UnitedHealth executive), which have not previously caused problems. TikTok, for its part, said that content that promotes violence or hatred is prohibited on the platform.

The situation also affected popular publishers. Comedian Pat Loller, who has 1.3 million subscribers, said his humorous video about Elon Musk’s inauguration gesture, which some perceived as a Nazi salute, was flagged as disinformation. The ability to share this video has been limited.

Some users complain about accounts being completely deleted. Political commentator Danisha Carter, who has 2 million followers, said her account was quickly suspended after TikTok temporarily stopped working. “This is a politically motivated decision,” Carter said, adding that TikTok refused to explain the reason for the block.

Other users report harsh penalties from the platform for innocuous comments or politically neutral content. For example, Ada “Mila” Ortiz, a data analyst and content creator, received warnings after leaving innocuous comments on other videos, and a warning that repeat violations would prevent her from accessing certain features. She was also forced to delete 15 of her videos supporting Kamala Harris and criticizing Trump. American users believe that the platform has begun to purposefully restrict content based on political views or other activities.
