The world’s first train capable of running on both hydrogen and electricity has been unveiled

Swiss company Stadler Rail has unveiled the RS Zero, the world’s first train capable of running on both hydrogen and electricity, reports New Atlas. Previously, just a few months ago, Stadler set a Guinness World Record with the Flirt H2 hydrogen train, which was able to travel more than 2,800 km without refueling.

The RS Zero will replace the popular but aging Stadler RS1 diesel and rapeseed oil biodiesel train, which has been running on European railways since 1996. The new train is designed specifically for small regional lines where electrification of tracks is difficult. Thanks to its relatively lightweight design and the ability to switch between hydrogen and electric modes, the RS Zero is ideal for these routes.

«Our goal was to develop a lightweight train that can operate without emissions on secondary routes,” said Stadler executive vice president Ansgar Brockmeyer. “With RS Zero, we can offer customers a train that is as comfortable, efficient and accessible as possible for all passengers, including people with disabilities.” The carriages have a low floor level and a barrier-free area, as well as a multi-functional area for bicycles and other bulky luggage, which truly makes them convenient for various categories of passengers.

The RS Zero will be available in one- and two-car configurations. The hydrogen version of the train will be able to travel up to 1,000 km without refueling, while the cruising range on batteries will be from 90 to 180 km. The maximum speed of the train will be 120 km/h. By offering two options to choose from, the company will give operators the flexibility to select fuel and train configurations based on their needs.

It is important to note that in keeping with its environmental principles, Stadler uses 98% renewable materials for the flooring and recycled materials for the side walls, including PET bottles, for the interior finishing. In addition, the climate control system uses environmentally friendly refrigerant. A prototype of the hydrogen train will be unveiled at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin later this month.
