Devices with E Ink screens were once an alternative to books, but by now the technology has developed enough to compete with traditional screens in tablets and monitors. The only problem so far is the low refresh rate of such screens, but China’s Dasung is trying to rid the world of this shortcoming.

Last year, the company showed off the Paperlike Color monitor, which offered a refresh rate of 33 Hz — enough to watch movies, but at least 60 Hz is required to comfortably work with most PC functions. This figure was achieved by the Paperlike 103 mobile monitor announced in winter — it offered the coveted 60 Hz, but at first the manufacturer offered the device mainly in China. Now it has appeared in the global Dasung online store.
With a 10.3-inch diagonal and a monochrome E Ink display, the Paperlike 103 mobile monitor is unlikely to replace a desktop monitor, but it can easily serve as an additional screen for a desktop computer, laptop or smartphone — all it needs is a USB Type-C port. Dasung noted compatibility issues with Apple products, so it is recommended to use the device with Windows and Linux computers.
At its thinnest point, the Paperlike 103 is only 5 mm thick; the monitor comes with a magnetic cover that can be used as a stand – there is also a stand in the form of a rod. The screen resolution is 1872 × 1404 pixels, and the refresh rate of 60 Hz ensures comfortable viewing of almost any material where color is not important; there is also a solution to eliminate residual halos of objects. The screen is equipped with a capacitive touch panel, but some functions will be more convenient to control using the physical buttons on the left panel. There is a front screen backlight, allowing you to use the monitor in both daylight and darkness. The retail price of Dasung Paperlike 103 is $ 349.
