The US new customs duties will not cause a sharp rise in price of chips

Canada and Mexico managed to achieve a monthly delay in the entry into force of import duties on goods from these countries to the United States, but Chinese products, although it was limited to a rate of 10 % instead of 25 %, did not receive such a delay. Experts explain that the import of semiconductor products from the listed three countries in the United States is not so great as to instantly affect the domestic American market.

A group of analysts Bernstein Société Générale Group explains that the United States is a major importer of semiconductor components, but not many corresponding products come from Canada, Mexico and China. If in 2023 the United States was imported as a whole of semiconductor products totaling $ 73 billion, then only $ 7 billion or less than 10 % of the total number of these countries. Accordingly, the increase in duties on the import of semiconductor products from Canada, Mexico and China will not be able to have a significant impact on the US market.

Another thing is that the introduction of increased duties in the United States can cause response measures of the same China, and the Middle Kingdom authorities have already decided to limit the supply of TVlur, tungsten, ruthenia and molybdenum outside their country. In general, such an escalation of the “trade war” can have unpleasant consequences for the US economy, so it cannot be argued that the introduction of duties by President Trump will not particularly affect the country’s ability to import semiconductor components, but in the segment of finished products a negative effect can be more pronounced.

By the way, the NVIDIA shares against this background fell on the eve of the moment to a six -month minimum, reacting to the corresponding risks. In 2023, the United States imported goods from China totaling $ 523 billion, and electrical products and equipment for various purposes dominated the supply structure. Import from Mexico was measured $ 475 billion, and vehicles can be added to the listed categories of goods in this direction. Finally, imports from Canada reached $ 419 billion, and the fuel was the main product category, although significant volumes of vehicles and equipment were supplied from this direction in the United States. Smartphones from China to the United States were delivered in the amount of $ 55 billion, and from Mexico – only $ 10 billion.

If we talk about the PC and server equipment, then from China in 2023 in the United States, products in the amount of $ 39 billion were imported, while Mexico received similar products for $ 28 billion. However, Foxconn was going to build the largest assembly enterprise on the basis of accelerators in Mexico. NVIDIA GB200, so the alignment of forces between the two countries may change.
