Variety reports that HBO has renewed The Last of Us for a third season, ahead of the second. The seven-episode series will debut on April 13 on Max.
In a statement to Variety, The Last of Us writer Craig Mazin said the team approached production on season two with the goal of “creating something we can be proud of.”
«“The end result exceeded even our most ambitious goals thanks to our partnership with HBO and the incredible work of our incredible cast and crew,” Mazin shared.
The Last of Us sequel will take place five years after the end of the first season, with Joel and Ellie being caught up in their collective past, drawing them into conflict with each other. The second season will not be a full retelling of The Last of Us Part II.
Mazin says the show is becoming more difficult to make with each season because of the growing scale of the episodes: “You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode ending.”
Ahead of its launch, The Last of Us season 2 has earned an 83% on Metacritic and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the cinematography, acting, and action, while criticizing the uneven pacing and lack of logical resolution.
