The Internet cable between Sweden and Finland was damaged in two places at once

Communication lines across the Swedish-Finnish land border were damaged twice within a very short time, GlobalConnect reported. According to the Associated Press, the relevant information was made public today, although problems with cables began on Monday in two places at once. The failure affected about 6 thousand private clients and 100 corporate users.

The first damage has already been repaired and Internet access has been “mostly” restored, while specialists are still working on the second. One break was related to excavation work, the reasons for the second are unclear. At the same time, the Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne of Finland wrote on the social network X that government officials are already investigating the incidents together with the company and “take the situation seriously.” Finnish police issued a brief statement saying they were not conducting a criminal investigation into the incident.

The Baltic region has already been in the spotlight recently due to damage to NATO cables, including undersea infrastructure linking Finland and Germany and Lithuania and Sweden. Just the other day, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Cable Protection Council (ICPC) announced the creation of a council dedicated to ensuring the reliability of submarine cable infrastructure.
