The European Commission will find out whether the presence of the Gemini Nano AI model in the Galaxy S24 interferes with Samsung’s competitors

The European Commission has begun a survey of smartphone market participants about how the use of Google’s Gemini Nano AI model in Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones could affect them, in order to find out whether there are signs of anti-competitive collusion in the deal between the two companies, writes Reuters.

In particular, the regulator asks in the questionnaire whether the pre-installation of Gemini Nano and its use through a device or cloud limits the use of other generative artificial intelligence systems that could also be pre-installed on the same device.

The European Commission is also investigating whether the pre-installation of Gemini Nano restricts interaction between other chatbots and applications pre-installed on Samsung smartphones.

Respondents were also asked whether they had attempted to negotiate a deal with device manufacturers to pre-install their AI chatbots. And if such an attempt was made, but ultimately proved unsuccessful, then what was the reason for the refusal.

Responses to this eight-page regulatory questionnaire are due from market participants this week.
