IFixit has launched sales of spare parts for the folding smartphone Google Pixel Pro 9 Fold, and it turns out that it is cheaper to buy a new flagship with a traditional form factor than to replace the folding internal display on this model. It’s even cheaper to buy a new Apple MacBook Air.

A set of spare parts to replace the internal display, which, in addition to itself, includes a frame, hinge and side buttons, will cost $1,199 – and that’s just the spare parts. The complete kit, which includes repair tools, costs $1,207. The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold smartphone itself starts at $1,799, and is one of the most expensive on the market.
Last year’s Pixel Fold cost $899 to replace the internal screen, and the new $1,199 price tag beats that by a significant margin. For comparison, for the same $1,199 you can buy an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a 13-inch Apple MacBook Air costs less – $1,099. An impressive amount for a DIY repair, but the kit comes with detailed instructions for replacing the screen – the process takes from 3 to 4 hours.
IFixit has added other spare parts for the Pixel Pro 9 Fold: an external screen ($190), rear cameras ($250), an internal front camera ($90), and both batteries ($67). Spare parts for other models of the Pixel 9 Pro series appeared from iFixit back in September.
