According to the job section on Tesla’s website, the data acquisition operator job at the company’s Palo Alto division involves wearing a motion capture suit and a virtual reality headset while performing certain movements.

It also states that applicants for the position must be in good physical condition as the trainer’s duties require walking more than seven hours per day while carrying up to 30 pounds. The applicant must be 170–180 cm tall to wear the motion capture suit and comfortably work in a virtual reality environment for long periods of time, which may cause nausea for some people. According to Musk, Optimus will be about 173 cm tall, hence the height requirements.

Requirements also include the ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, bend, reach, squat and turn throughout the day. Trainers will be required to analyze the information they collect and prepare reports. They will work a flexible schedule day/night with one day off and overtime if necessary. Pay ranges from $25 to $48 per hour with bonuses and benefits.

According to Musk, several Optimus robots are already working at Tesla’s Fremont plant, where they carry battery cells and place them in shipping containers.
