Australian internet regulator eSafety has fined the Telegram messenger 958 million Australian dollars (about $600,000). The reason for this punishment was that the service failed to respond to the agency’s request for measures taken to combat terrorist and other illegal content on the platform within the deadline.

The report says that in March 2024, the Australian regulator requested information from the largest Internet platforms regarding the identification and removal of content related to terrorist activity, extremism, sexual exploitation of minors, etc. Recipients of the eSafety request had to provide the information of interest to the agency by May 6, 2024.
It is noted that Telegram handed over the requested information to the regulator on October 13, violating the established deadline by more than five months. The regulator explained such a severe penalty for the delay in transferring data by the fact that it seriously disrupted the work of eSafety. “Understanding where and how such platforms may be failing, as well as finding out where they succeed, is vital to protecting society and raising security standards across the industry,” eSafety commented on this issue.
Under Australian law, Telegram has 28 days to pay the fine, ask the regulator for a grace period, or appeal eSafety’s decision.
