Spotify has sent Apple an update to its iOS app that includes information about subscription prices and the ability to purchase subscriptions through external links — without using Apple’s built-in purchasing system. Spotify is not required to pay a fee to Apple when subscribing using alternative payment methods in the updated app.

Spotify said the April 30 ruling “provides consumers around the world with the benefits they deserve,” calling it “a great day for Spotify users in the U.S.” Here’s what Spotify says users will be able to do with the updated app:

  • Finally see pricing in the app, including detailed subscription pricing and promotions to help you save
  • Follow the link and choose one of the Premium subscriptions
  • It’s easy to follow the link and easily change your subscription from an Individual plan to a Student, Duo, or Family plan;
  • Use payment methods other than the Apple system – the site offers a wider range of payment options;
  • In the future, use other convenient purchasing methods that directly support content creators (for example, the ability to easily purchase audiobooks).

Spotify said it was “absurd” that it had previously been unable to offer customers such “basic features” and added that it had now removed “significant elements of Apple’s anti-competitive barriers” – a change it said was “long overdue”.

Spotify said the move could “create real opportunities for creators to grow their businesses and share their work with fans through the Spotify platform.” Specifically, publishers will soon be able to sell their audiobooks directly through Spotify.

Spotify, Epic Games, Patreon and other developers are already submitting updates to the App Store with alternative payment methods. Apple has been ordered to immediately allow developers to add links to external payment methods.
