Sony PlayStation VR2 headset now officially supports Steam and PC, but without some features

Gamers who prefer PCs to consoles can now connect the Sony PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) virtual reality headset to their computers and play thousands of games from the SteamVR library, including the iconic Half-Life: Alyx. However, it was not without restrictions.

But there’s a catch: the PSVR2 was not originally designed to work with a PC, so connecting it to a computer will require an adapter, which is sold in some stores and directly from Sony for $59.99. When you consider that the headset itself costs $549.99, it’s not nearly as attractive an option as you might expect.

And that is not all. Many important PSVR2 features including HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback on controllers are not available when connected to a PC. And Sony has not yet said whether they will appear in the future. The most important advantage of PSVR2 remains OLED displays with a resolution of 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, support for games with a screen refresh rate of 90 and 120 Hz and a field of view of 110°. The headset is supported by the SteamVR platform.

Sony has provided a list of system requirements for a PC to which the headset can be connected:

  • OS Windows 10/11 (64 bit);
  • Processor no lower than Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 architecture and later);
  • RAM from 8 GB;
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics and higher (Turing architecture and higher), Nvidia GeForce RTX series video cards, AMD Radeon RX 5500XT/6500XT and higher, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and higher or AMD Radeon RX 6600XT and higher are recommended;
  • DisplayPort 1.4 video output (standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort connector);
  • USB direct connection;
  • Bluetooth 4.0 and later.
