Last year, Sony unveiled Project Amethyst, an AI collaboration in which Sony PlayStation and AMD pooled resources to improve gameplay and graphics using artificial intelligence. Now, AMD has confirmed that its FSR 4 scaling technology, which uses machine learning, uses AI models developed jointly with Sony Interactive Entertainment. In other words, FSR 4 is the result of a collaboration between PlayStation and AMD.

«“We are excited to partner with PlayStation on Project Amethyst! FSR 4 looks fantastic! We are very excited to be working with Sony Interactive Entertainment to develop the models used to scale FSR 4. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more information!” AMD Radeon posted on its X social media page.
This statement suggests that PlayStation and AMD will continue to collaborate on more advanced AI tools and technologies. The development of FSR 4 has been a great success for the company, as confirmed by the first reviews of the Radeon RX 9070 series graphics cards, which exclusively support this technology.
If you look at the list of games with FSR 4 support, you can see that almost all Sony PlayStation games ported to PC are present. This includes games like The Last of Us Part I, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and others. And all this is due to the fact that when Sony ported these games to PC, they were provided with support for FSR 3.1 technology, as well as APIs that allow for quick implementation of support for the new version of the FSR 4 upscaler.
It is unclear how the development of FSR 4 may affect the PlayStation platform in the future. Sony has its own PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) upscaler for the PlayStation 5 Pro game console. It is possible that as part of further cooperation with AMD, the company will be able to improve PSSR, which in turn will lead to improved image quality for future PS5 Pro games. It is also possible that PSSR and FSR 4 will become more similar over time.
