Shipments of PCs and laptops grew by 1.3% in the last quarter, according to Canalys estimates

The data published by Canalys contradicts IDC statistics on the PC market in the third quarter. The first source indicates an increase in shipments of PCs, laptops and workstations year-on-year for the period, while IDC data indicated a decrease. Moreover, Canalys representatives claim that year-over-year PC shipments have increased for the fourth quarter in a row.

It is possible that the discrepancy is due to the calculation methodology, since Canalys also takes into account workstations. Statistics for individual manufacturers in the two sources may differ in quantitative terms, but there are no contradictions in the direction of changes. As is the case with IDC data, Canalys statistics show Lenovo product shipments growing year-on-year by almost 3%, with the latest source attributing 24.8% of the market to the Chinese manufacturer versus 24% for IDC.

Among large manufacturers, Asustek Computer can be considered a growth leader, since this company increased its product shipments by 15.8%, according to Canalys, to 5.5 million units. Apple in the Canalys report also shows negative dynamics, but not so pronounced: by 17.5 versus 24.2% for IDC. By the way, according to IDC, manufacturers outside the Big Six as a whole showed a decline in PC shipments of 5.6%, while Canalys data indicates an increase of 7.1%.

In total, according to the results of the third quarter, as reported by Canalys, 66.4 million laptops, desktop PCs and workstations were delivered. This is 1.3% more than a year earlier. At the same time, laptops individually increased by 2.8% to 53.5 million units, and desktop PCs decreased supply volumes by 4.6% to 12.9 million units. The next 12 months, according to Canalys analysts, will demonstrate growth in finished computers, since Microsoft will wind down support for Windows 10 in October next year. However, in these conditions, the demand for new PCs will mainly be demonstrated by corporate clients. PC suppliers surveyed by Canalys in 54% of cases said that they expect an increase in product sales volumes in the second half of this year compared to the same period of the previous year.
