Selectel has shared statistics on repelling DDoS attacks in the second half of 2024. The number of attacks has increased sharply — to 80,735, which is 2.6 times higher than the same period a year earlier and an average of 13,455 attacks per month. We are talking about attacks recorded by the DDoS protection system of the network infrastructure of Selectel data centers, which operates using the company’s cloud platform, platform services and dedicated servers, including certified segments.

The maximum number of attacks per client averaged 2,780, and a record of 4,621 incidents was recorded in September, which is 3.6 times more than in the first half of the year. The maximum attack volume was noted in November — 412 Gbit/s, although the average volume of data transferred per incident this month was minimal, and the highest value of this indicator (48 GB) was recorded in July.

The highest average number of packets transmitted per incident of 500 million was recorded in July, which is 24 times higher than the minimum value recorded in September. The highest attack speed was recorded in July – 103 million packets/s, which is almost 5 times higher than the maximum in December, which was the lowest – 22 million packets/s. The most frequently observed attacks were TCP PSH/ACK Flood, TCP SYN Flood and UDP Flood, which accounted for 70% of all attacks.

During the reporting period, the total duration of attacks was 9,718 hours. The longest attacks were in October — 2,167 hours, the minimum duration was recorded in November — 1,127 hours. With the exception of July, the average duration of one attack did not exceed 7 minutes, and the longest attack lasted in December — 202 hours, which is almost 10 times more than the figures for previous months. On average, the total duration of attacks on one client was 10 hours, and the maximum time a client was under attack was 492 hours — 2.9 times more than the figures for the first half of 2024.

In its 2024 results, Selectel reported that it had repelled 112,171 attacks on its customers. The total time that Selectel customers were under attack was 13,613 hours. The number of attacks and the total duration increased, although the average duration of one attack did not change significantly. According to Selectel, repeated incidents became more frequent, leading to an increase in the maximum total duration of attacks per customer from 172 hours in April to 492 in July, while the maximum duration of one attack increased to 202 hours in December from 156 hours in April.
