Scalped Ryzen 9 9950X3Ds Go on Sale for €999 — Up to 23°C Cooler Than Regular

Thermal Grizzly has expanded its range of scalped processors and now offers a 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D with the heat spreader removed. The chip costs €999 (including VAT). The company previously began offering scalped Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Well-known overclocker, enthusiast and head of Thermal Grizzly Roman “Der8auer” Hartung posted a video on YouTube demonstrating the process of scalping a processor and the results. After removing the cover, the operating temperature of the processor was reduced by 23 degrees Celsius. Using this advantage, Der8auer was able to increase the clock speed of the processor and its power limit. The result was a 9 percent increase in performance in the synthetic Cinebench R23 test. However, this also led to a 73 percent increase in the power consumption of the processor.

In games, additional overclocking did not help much. In Counter-Strike 2 at 4K resolution and maximum quality settings, the maximum FPS increased by only 3%. However, a noticeable increase was noted in the minimum frame rate per second – it increased from 355 to 388 FPS, that is, FPS drops decreased. Power consumption increased by 48%.

Der8auer notes that even without additional overclocking, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D works faster after scalping. The enthusiast noted an increase of 50-75 MHz in the frequency in the multi-threaded Cinebench R23 test after removing the cover from the processor. This is explained by the fact that when the operating temperature decreases, the algorithms for increasing the processor’s clock frequency work more aggressively, even without increasing the limit of the permissible power (energy consumption) of the chip.
