Samsung will launch mass production of rollable displays for laptops

Samsung Display created a rollable OLED display for the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable notebook, which was unveiled at CES 2025. And now Samsung has announced that it will soon begin mass production of rollable displays that will be available to other laptop manufacturers.

According to Samsung, mass production of rollable OLED displays will begin in April this year.

«As the rollable display expands, it may experience stress, but based on our experience with mass production of foldable displays, we have planned for this and ensured the durability of our rollable products. The rollable display will bring innovation to IT devices, especially in terms of laptop mobility and ease of use in everyday life,” said Yougseok Kim, vice president and head of IT sales at Samsung Display.

The first laptop with a rollable OLED screen was the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable. It is equipped with a 14-inch display, which can be increased vertically by almost 50% if necessary. When collapsed, the display has an aspect ratio of 5:4, and when expanded, this figure changes to 8:9, and the screen diagonal increases to 16.7 inches. The ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable is expected to go on sale in June.

Samsung Display is also the first to use Eco² OLED non-polarized display technology in laptop screens, which was originally developed for premium smartphones. This innovation makes it possible to reduce panel thickness and reduce energy consumption by 30%. In addition, Eco² OLED is the industry’s first OLED panel to have polarization functionality built directly into the panel through the use of a special cellular film.
