Samsung announced at MWC 2025 an OLED panel with a peak brightness of 5,000 cd/m2, which can be used in smartphones, smartwatches and laptops.

This OLED panel uses Samsung’s proprietary On-Cell Film (OCF) technology, which eliminates the need for polarizers — optical filters that increase contrast but reduce the brightness of the OLED panel by almost half. By removing the polarizer, Samsung has increased not only the brightness of the OLED panel, but also its energy efficiency.
According to the company, OCF OLED panels are up to 1.5 times brighter with the same power consumption and up to 20% thinner than the current generation of OLED screens that use polarizers. This means that with the same brightness, the new OLED panels consume 63% of the energy used by the previous generation of OLED displays. This increases battery and display life and reduces heat generation.
Peak brightness of 5000 cd/m2 is achieved in a 10% window (10% of the entire screen surface), which exceeds the results of competitors who report achieving similar peak brightness on a much smaller screen surface – 1 or 5% of its area.
The new technology was first introduced in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and now the company plans to use it in smartphones in the candy bar form factor and even in laptops with a rollable OLED screen.
