Samsung Shows Prototypes of Foldable Asymmetrical Smartphone and Foldable Portable Game Console

Rumors of Samsung’s plans to release its first three-fold foldable smartphone this year have been circulating for quite some time. The device is expected to feature two hinges that will allow the side flaps to fold inward, similar to the Flex G concept that was previously unveiled.

At the MWC 2025 exhibition currently taking place in Barcelona, the South Korean company once again showed the concept models Flex G and Flex S, as well as a strange clamshell smartphone and a concept of a portable gaming console with a flexible display.

The smartphone concept has been given the rather accurate name Asymmetric Flip, and visually it looks like the Galaxy Z Flip, but with two hinges that are located at different distances from the upper and lower surfaces of the case.

Thanks to this unusual arrangement of the hinges, a narrow part of the screen remains open even when the smartphone is folded.

Since the smartphone’s display remains partially visible when folded, it’s possible that the exposed area could support the Always-on Display feature. However, it’s hard to imagine anyone would find this design more appealing than the one already used in the Galaxy Z Flip.

While the Asymmetric Flip’s design may not be as eye-catching, the handheld gaming console concept on display at Samsung’s booth seems more sophisticated. Its design resembles a sleek Nintendo Switch, complete with a hinge in the middle that allows it to fold in half.

On both sides of the case are joysticks, which when the device is folded, should be aligned with the notches of the round elements of the D-pad. The concept of a portable gaming console looks like a device that is almost ready to enter the market.

It’s likely that Samsung will actually make foldable gaming consoles at some point. However, the current version of the device has a visible crease in the screen where the hinge is located, which could negatively impact gameplay. Perhaps Samsung should consider how to remove the crease before it goes into production, if it ever does.
