Rumors: Ubisoft Restarts Escape from Tarkov-Style Multiplayer Far Cry, Far Cry 7 Is Doing Well

Reliable insider Tom Henderson has shared information about the development progress of an unannounced game in the Far Cry series from Ubisoft Montreal – a multiplayer shooter codenamed Maverick.

It was previously reported that Maverick is positioned as an evacuation shooter in the spirit of Escape from Tarkov and will take players to Alaska, where they will have to fight for survival with nature, enemy AI fighters and other users.

As Henderson now reports, Maverick’s development has been restarted following a recent review. The game will reportedly return to the prototyping stage, which will be handled by Ubisoft’s Canadian studio Sherbrooke.

Maverick was originally intended to be a multiplayer component of Far Cry 7, but in early 2023 it evolved into a standalone product

The exact reason for the restart of Maverick development is unknown to the insider, but he suggests that the decision was made as part of Ubisoft’s ongoing strategy to optimize teams and projects amid a protracted crisis.

Henderson’s sources report that the Maverick reboot had been planned for a long time, but the final straw was the departure of the Talisker technical team in late December – it had been helping with the project, but was transferred entirely to Blackbird (Far Cry 7).

Blackbird is also being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. The team has already begun playtesting and is optimistic about releasing the game in 2026. Ubisoft Berlin, Ubisoft Annecy, Redstorm and the aforementioned Talisker are also involved in the project.

In December, Henderson said Ubisoft was tired of the “Far Cry formula” and was looking to rethink the gameplay for Blackbird and Maverick, the latter of which had already raised concerns among staff amid the declining popularity of evacuation shooters.
