According to a study by Realme, among 2,000 users on the Yandex Vzglyad platform, 60% of respondents have experienced breakdowns of their devices over the past three years. The frequency and type of breakdowns depend on the age and gender of the user, their region of residence, and their habits of using the gadget.

Reasons for contacting service centers

The most common breakdowns are damage to the display or glass (40.7% of users encountered this) and rapid battery discharge (25.9%). 69% of users have dropped their devices, and 43.9% have encountered problems due to water. 8% do not use protective accessories, which raises questions about their effectiveness.

How do geography and age affect breakdowns?

В Центральном и Северо-Западном федеральных округах повреждения чаще из-за падений (>72% of cases), in the south and Siberia — from moisture (up to 50%). In the North Caucasus, speakers break more often — presumably due to the greater use of smartphones for listening to music and communicating.

Young people are more likely to encounter mechanical damage to gadgets, while people over 40 are more likely to encounter problems with batteries and device failures without apparent reason. This may be due to the older generation being more careful.

Who is more careful – men or women?

Women are more likely to use protective cases and glass (80.6% and 68.3%, respectively), while men are less likely to do so (66.2% and 51.9%). Women are also more likely to experience battery issues (27.6% versus 23.6%), which may be due to more intensive smartphone use.

How does the cost of a smartphone affect the purchase of protective accessories?

The more expensive the smartphone, the more often the owners use protective accessories. Among users of devices costing more than 50,000 rubles, only 4.1% do not use protection, and for budget ones this figure is 8.3%.

Which smartphones break most often?

The most susceptible to breakdowns are: Samsung (23.5%), Xiaomi (16.8%), Apple (11.5%), Honor (11.2%) and Redmi (10.6%). However, the reliability of devices depends not only on the brand, but also on the usage scenario.

How do service centers help solve problems?

39.7% of users contacted service centers: 54.9% solved their problems, 25.8% partially, and 19.3% were unable to fix the device. This may be due to the insufficient qualification of specialists and a short warranty period. Realme, taking into account the needs of users, increased the warranty period to 2 years.

Why do smartphones break?

69% of users blame their own carelessness for breakdowns, while 36% believe that manufacturers intentionally make devices prone to breakdowns. This point of view is more popular among women (38.3% versus 33.3%).

Are users aware of security standards?

Only 26.1% of respondents know about dust and moisture protection standards. Those who do not use protective accessories are more likely to be aware of it – 31% versus 26%. 78% consider protection from water and dust an important factor when choosing a smartphone.

Realme, the initiator of the survey, includes IP69 in its models. For example, the Realme C75 has an IP69 protection level and is certified by TÜV Rheinland as a “Rugged Smartphone”. Realme will soon introduce new smartphones in the 14 Pro and 14 Pro+ series with IP69 in the mid-price segment.

Bottom line: how to avoid breakdowns?

The main causes of breakdowns are mechanical damage and water ingress. Despite the popularity of protective accessories, their effectiveness is sometimes questionable. To extend the service life of the device, it is recommended to be careful when using it and take into account the degree of dust and moisture protection when purchasing.
