PlayStation 5 sold 61.7 million copies – Xbox Series S/X sales are more than half as low

The recent announcement of the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro gaming console provides a formal reason to take stock of the presence on the market of the original PS5, which was introduced in 2020. According to statistics, by June of this year, the PlayStation 5 had found 61.7 million buyers, while the competing Microsoft Xbox Series S/X was content with 28.3 million units sold.

The corresponding data appeared in a video story by The Wall Street Journal dedicated to modern game consoles. Statistics combining Sony reporting and Aldora Intelligence data demonstrate more than twofold superiority of Sony’s current solution over the competing Microsoft gaming platform. By the way, this gap was not always like this if we look at the previous generations of game consoles from the two companies. While the PlayStation 4 was almost exactly twice as popular as the Xbox One with 117 million units sold, the PlayStation 3 with its 87.4 million units was only slightly ahead of the Xbox 360.

However, the absolute record holder remains the Sony PlayStation 2, which has sold 155 million units during its presence on the market since 2000. Introduced a year later, the first-generation Microsoft Xbox found only 24.7 million buyers during its life cycle.

If by the end of this year Sony manages to sell 15 million PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles, then the total circulation of the generation will exceed 80 million units. The success of Sony consoles, as noted by the authors of the story on The Wall Street Journal channel, has been facilitated in recent years by the abundance of exclusive games for this platform.
